All of the Trust’s CHD services are currently based on the Freeman Hospital site.  The Trust is commissioned to provide level 1 CHD services but is not currently compliant with Level 2 of the core national service specification standards for this service:

With a move to enhance the paediatric care service offered at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle City centre, the new 6000m² facility will also be located at the head of the RVI site.  Incorporating paediatric surgery, nephrology and gastroenterology services (which are all based in the GNCH on the RVI site), the purpose-built specialist health building will provide extensive paediatric Cardiotheracic in patient care.  The design includes a significant portion of high-end clinical care services that demand the highest category of supporting MEP services.

Like other current health buildings in design stage, CAD21 is contributing greatly to the Client aspiration for achieving zero carbon and BREAM Outstanding targets for the scheme.  CAD21 is also involved in a concurrent Clinical service building design also on the RVI site, and is therefore applying a whole site energy strategy for the future to the design of both buildings.
